Happy Friday Pettigrew Crew,
The January Play! by Sephora subscription box is a perfect example of why Sephora Play is such a heavy hitter in the battle of the beauty boxes! As you know, I’m a sucker for Happy Mail and this box put a huge smile on my face – heart eyes all the way! Let’s Jump in.
Unboxing & Review of Play! by Sephora -January 2017
For those of you new to Play! by Sephora, every month you get this cute little white and black striped box in the mail. Inside is a drawstring bag full of makeup treats. The bags usually has a unique and fun design. {Beauty Tip: They’re great for using to give little “just because” gifts to friends and family}
The January Play! by Sephora theme is centered around being active and on the go, so I think it’s pretty cute that they designed their bag around the concept of a nylon and mesh gym bag.
Sephora’s beauty box has a really great product menu. On the front is your PLAY! PASS card that grants you an in-store makeup consultation with a Sephora Beauty Consultant and 50 extra beauty insider points with any in-store purchase. The points can be used to score all kinds of Sephora beauty products.
The theme this month is all about a fresh start and the products are centered around detoxing and refueling your beauty routine.
Here’s my fully opened Play! by Sephora beauty menu. It’s quite a spread and filled with tons of info on each product, from directions for use to interesting tidbits about the brands. It’s like a mini makeup & skincare magazine. Love it!
The Play! by Sephora -January 2017 Products
Tory Burch Love Relentlessly Perfume Review
First up, is this pretty little scent from Tory Burch. I appreciate that the sample is a spritzer and not one that you have to take the stopper out {and hope half of the perfume doesn’t spill out in the process} It’s great for throwing in your purse.
The scent is floral and girly without being overly sweet. It has a romantic vibe and the hunky husband approves. It’s kind of a perfect scent for Valentine’s Day.
If you’re into more unisex or musky scents, then this is probably not your jam, but I’m all about it!
Tarte Cosmetics Frxxxtion Exfoliating Stick
I love what Tarte has got going on and how natural their products are. They are quickly becoming one of my top beauty brands and this frxxxtion stick is such a great idea. I have never used a cleanser in stick form before and I really like the convenience factor. You just draw all over your face like a preschooler with a crayon and as you rub it around it turns into a white lather.
It’s texture is creamy, but it also has a very gentle exfoliating thing happening that feels like finely milled sand or salt. I dig it. {Beauty Tip: if you leave it on for 10 mins is becomes quite a nice mask}
Ouai Treatment Masque
Ouai knows what they’re doing when it comes to hair and this mask is no exception. It smells wonderful and it has a slick gel type of feel to it. It leaves my hair shiny and I’m into shiny. {Beauty Tip: just a tiny bit of this spread on my curly hair after it’s dry tames frizz and adds even more shine}
Clinique Almost Lipstick Black Honey
My favorite item in this month’s Sephora box goes to this little beauty. This sheer lipstick in Black Honey is a cult classic that has been around since 1971 and is just as relevant and awesome today as when it launched. So good.
I have naturally very pink lips, so when I add anything sheer in a pink or bright red shade my lips just go to a neon place I don’t want to be. So, this Black Honey shade is so perfect for me. It has a dark raisin type of vibe on the stick, but it’s goes on sheer. So, when I put it on it makes my lips this very natural, rosy red color that I just adore. So great for low makeup days!
This lippie was so good it gets two photos. Ha!
Amore Pacific Cushion Compact
I didn’t discover that this Amore Pacific sample came with a tini tiny compact until after I took the pictures, and tested everything out, but OMGoodness so cute! I love my BB cream and I have tried a different cushion compact before and really liked it, but this was my first time using a CC cream. Woah, yes please.
This formula is so lux and creamy. It feels like you’re putting moisturizer on your face instead of foundation. I’m not sure how this would do on oily skin types, but on my normal to dry skin it’s a delight. It also smooths out my skin tone beautifully and looks very natural doing it. Winning!
Farmacy Honey Potion Mask
The last little beauty friend in the box is this hydrating honey potion from Farmacy. First of all, how pretty is this mask. I just want to rub it all over my face, oh and I get to. It goes on kind of how you would expect honey to, but then as you gently rub it on your face, this warming thing happens. Then the mask magically changes into a white cream that feels so nice while it’s drying. My skin was so soft and hydrated after using this product, I felt like I had taken a trip to the spa.
Fun fact about Farmacy: their headquarters are actually located on a farm in upstate New York where they produce honey and grow some of the plants they use in their products. That’s just freakin’ cool!
Final Thoughts on Play! by Sephora -January 2017
I get a lot of subscription boxes in my happy mailbox and usually in my beauty boxes there are products that I love and others, well not so much. This box had all winners for me and honestly, Play! by Sephora usually does.
All of these products did wonders for my skin, hair and lips and left me smelling fine. I just have nothing but good things to say about my January Play! by Sephora box. And I also want to add that I’ve had some of my Pettigrew Crew asking me what box they should try if they are just getting into subscription boxes and I think Play! by Sephora is a great choice.
It’s $10 a month {shipping included} and you’re receiving the best and brightest beauty products that Sephora has to offer. The value is kind of ridiculous and I’m a fan!

It’s my fav right now for sure!
Your new blog looks great! I love how easy it is to navigate! Great work, girl!
Thanks so much! I’m lovin’ it.
Firstly, I’m still totally digging your blogs new look! The Play box does look fun. I’ve never heard of an exfoliating stick before, I need to try out Tarte, but it’s one of these brands that’s hard/expensive to get in NZ… sigh! Great reviews Leah xx
Thanks so much. I hadn’t heard of one either, but I’m a new fan now.
I don’t know what is it with me this month, but I love dark lipsticks. It seems that this one is pretty good color. I must try out this cc cream it has caught my attention.
It’s not as dark as it looks because it’s pretty sheer, but it’s such a good shade on the lips!
These look great and I really want to try Ouai products. I wish Sephora’s reward program was better though. Instead of points, I would prefer discounts!
Discounts would be nice! I love Ouai.
OMG I am so jealous! I want to try out that perfume sample! I saw it in the recent Ulta catalog and I was oogling at it, lol. I really want to get Sephora Play! I keep reading all these posts about it. Hopefully I get off the waitlist soon!
I wore Tory Burch scent the last two days and it’s just dreamy. I wish they didn’t have a waitlist anymore. It’s a bummer that people are still on it.
I knowwwww~~~~ I will just have to be more patient…..sigh..For now, I’ll live through everyone’s posts lol
I’m really thinking about doing this! Love the blog!
It’s such a great beauty box!

Do you do any beauty box subscriptions?
I don’t – I don’t see any advertised and mostly try not to tempt myself (I like hearing reviews though and may you tube it)

I didn’t know–and shouldn’t know!–about this subscription box. Oh my goodness…so tempting!
It is a great price. lol!
I like all the products in your box but if I had to pick one it would certainly be the Amore Pacific Cushion Compact. I can’t believe you got all that stuff and it cost 10 bucks!
What a great box! Everything in it looks fantastic. I would like that honey potion.
I’ve heard lots about this Sephora box, and it looks like it’s a good deal! I’ve never tried any kind of subscription box, but I think the element of surprise would be fun to look forward to each month.
