The $20 beautyblender sponge was one of the most talked about new beauty products of 2015. It was kind of a game changer in the makeup world and its innovation is definitely noteworthy.

Here’s the scoop on the beautyblender straight from the official website:

“The world’s first edgeless, non-disposable, high-definition cosmetic sponge applicator. The unique shape and exclusive material available only with beautyblender ensures impeccable, streak-free application with minimum product waste. Use it with primers, foundations, powders, cream blushes, and any other complexion product.

beautyblender  features an open cell structure that fills with small amounts of water when wet. This allows the sponge to be “full” so that the makeup product sits on top of the sponge rather than being absorbed, allowing you to use less product every time. When wet, beautyblender doubles in size and becomes even softer, returning to its original size when it air dries.”

So, my conclusion: The beautyblender = fantastic product. But…what if you want a product that can do all of those lovely things and not cost $20 for a sponge you have to replace in a few months time?

ENTER THE DUPE: The Jouvenet “Perfect Blender” Makeup Sponge

{My Dupe Story & Review}

This is hands down my favorite new beauty product of the season! I have heard so much about blending sponges and I knew I wanted one, but I didn’t want to spend $20 on a single sponge. So, I bought one at the drugstore and I was very disappointed. It looked great in its package, but when I tried to use it, I had horrible results.

It wasn’t squishy, or soft and when I added water to it, nothing happened. Forget about applying my foundation. It was just terrible. I threw it against a wall in an effort to show my husband how “not soft” it was and it almost took his eye out. Not cute! I ended up throwing it away and I almost bought the $20 sponge everyone was talking about, but I decided to check Amazon first to see if I could find a sponge that was less money, but had great reviews.

That’s when I found this little beauty. The Jouvenet sponge (or should I say sponges, because you get 2!) had great reviews and from the pictures, it looked exactly like the other (more expensive) sponge I was considering. I was struck by how many people were saying it was bouncy, soft and almost doubled its size when you applied water to it. I was struck even more by the great price. Two for $10 is an amazing price don’t ya think? So, I pulled the trigger and bought the sponges.

I bought these about a month ago and I have used them constantly! I love these sponges so much. They are a complete game changer to my makeup situation. I use them to apply my foundation, concealer and even contour. I squeeze the sponge under cold running water and it puffs up and gets even softer and more bouncy. I gently squeeze out the excess water into a T-shirt (more gentle than a towel) and I apply my makeup with the damp sponge by gently patting it into my skin. This way my makeup has awesome, even coverage that lasts. The result is so much more natural looking, even when I am using full coverage foundation. Plus, applying my makeup just feels better now. I feel like I am being more gentle with my skin.

There are two sponges, which is great because I use the purple sponge for applying my concealer and highlight and the pink sponge for applying my foundation, contour and bronzer. The sponges also come with a little pouch for drying. After use, I just gentle wash my sponge with baby soap, put it in the pouch and hang it to dry.

One word of caution I will give is: be gentle with these sponges when you are washing and squeezing them out. They are sponges, not bricks (like the wonky drugstore sponge. That was a brick) and they are very soft and delicate when wet, (which is awesome) but you want to treat them with care so that they don’t get tiny holes or tears.

The Verdict: For me, these are a must have. I am so glad I found the Jouvenet Sponges and I will be buying them again and again. I don’t know how you could find a better dupe for the beautyblender and I’m glad to share this find with the Pettigrew Crew!

Beauty Buzz Question: Do you use a makeup sponge to apply your makeup? Which one? (I know I cheated, it’s two questions)

10 thoughts on “An Awesome Beauty Blender Dupe!”

  1. I have an Original beautyblender and love the fact that it doesn’t seem to have a scent, unlike those wedges from the past. I recently received a Sephora blender and it seemed very similar to the beautyblender. Good to know there is a less expensive option!

  2. Hi Deb! I know what you mean. I never liked/used the old makeup sponges I always felt like they used up my product and just slide the makeup around on the surface of my face. I love that I can really press the makeup into my skin with this sponge and the effect is so natural and beautiful. I also love the price of my perfect blenders!

  3. I don’t use a makeup sponge I use a brush, I used to have a sponge similar to this but It wasn’t working for me the way I wanted it too. 🙁Lovely post as per usual.

  4. I was in the same situation — looking for a cheaper version of the tradition beautyblenders. I tried a few drugstore ones and couldn’t find one that matched so I just splurge every month and buy one. Thanks for sharing your find I can’t wait to get my order in!

  5. Hi Shauni! I’m excited for you. ha ha. I hope you love these sponges like I do. I use them all of the time! You’re reminding me that I need to post so more dupe posts. They’re so fun and helpful.
